The cabinet size pays back in a fuller sound.

PCGamesN heard a smooth, unforced, and full presentation from the larger enclosure and 4-inch driver.

“This combination of a relatively large speaker housing and a large main driver makes for a very smooth, unforced, and full sound.”

Two cabinets take real desk space.

PCGamesN measured each speaker at 146 × 196 × 234mm and warned that the pair is closer to full-size hi-fi speakers than compact desktop boxes.

“Nonetheless, you'll need a reasonable amount of desk space to accommodate these units.”

A phone, TV, line-level turntable, and PC can stay connected.

PCGamesN found Bluetooth plus optical, coaxial, and two RCA inputs, with separate input buttons on the remote. A turntable needs line-level output, either built in or from a separate phono preamp.

“In terms of features, the R1280DBs offer Bluetooth support for convenient connection to a phone or other mobile device, and include both analog and digital inputs.”

What this use has to accept

USB audio is the missing connection.

A computer without Bluetooth still needs an analog or digital audio output. The speakers do not take audio directly over USB.

“The one obvious missing feature here is a USB audio input - these speakers will require a sound card with analog or digital outputs to connect to any PC that doesn't have Bluetooth.”

They can step beyond near-field listening.

PCGamesN said the pair reaches decent volume and can move from a late-night kitchen session to house-party levels.

“They'll play anything perfectly well and at very decent volumes too - these speakers could easily step up from late-night kitchen party duties to full-on house party levels of noise.”

The top end gives up some fine detail.

The same review found the overall sound smooth, but heard more crispness and definition from pricier speakers.

“Top-end detail isn't the most sparkling, with more expensive speakers delivering more crispness and definition.”

What that adds up to

  • Desk: smooth, full sound. Each cabinet is 146 × 196 × 234mm.
  • Sources: Bluetooth, optical, coaxial, and two RCA inputs. There is no USB audio input.
  • Music: enough volume for a party. More expensive speakers recover more top-end detail.
