A small monitor reaches useful bass on the measurement rig.
Audio Science Review measured the MR4 flat down to 70Hz. That is the useful low-end case for a compact, inexpensive near-field monitor.
“It is flat down to 70 Hz! The broad deviations are very audible but rather easy to correct with EQ as you see later.”See this measured review on Audio Science ReviewAudio Science Review · MR4 · 2021-12
The response is not neutral everywhere.
The same measurements found a lower-treble dip and resonances around 600Hz. ASR says the broad deviations are audible but fairly easy to correct with EQ.
“there is a dip in the lower treble frequencies. And we have some resonances/peaking centered around 600 Hz.”See the response measurements in the same ASR reviewAudio Science Review · MR4 · spinorama
Sliding left or right does not change the balance much.
ASR found unusually good horizontal directivity for the price. That gives you some freedom to move across a workstation instead of staying locked to one point.
“And the wide width means that you can move left and right at your workstation without much change in tonality.”See the directivity measurements in the same ASR reviewAudio Science Review · MR4 · directivity
Vertical placement is less forgiving.
The same test says vertical directivity is not as good, which is typical for a two-way non-coaxial speaker. Keep the tweeters near ear height.
“Vertically is not as good and this is typical of 2-way, non-coaxial designs:”See the vertical-directivity note in the same ASR reviewAudio Science Review · MR4 · vertical response
An interface and a computer can both plug in.
TechRadar found plenty of analog connectivity: balanced TRS for an audio interface, RCA, and a front aux input, plus a front headphone jack.
“But, it does come with an RCA input, TRS balanced input for use with audio interfaces, and an Aux input located on the front of the right speaker (along with the headphone jack).”See this real MR4 review on TechRadarTechRadar · MR4 · 2023-03
Wireless and digital sources need another box.
Every built-in input is analog. A phone without a headphone jack, a USB-only laptop setup, or an optical TV needs an adapter or interface.
“There’s no Bluetooth, optical, or USB connectivity that you’ll find on other computer speakers.”See the connectivity limit in the same TechRadar reviewTechRadar · MR4 · connectivity
